About
My Story
My parents did not believe, much less understand about eating healthy. In fact, what I can remember most is eating peas and string beans out of cans and not eating much of them or for that matter, much else. Food was a turn-off unless it was sweets! Growing up in the fifties and sixties, there were not a lot of restaurants, so home cooked meals which were, for the most part, tasteless or overcooked, were my only food options. My father owned a retail business and worked long hours, six days a week, and my mom helped him in the business and/or seemed to do a lot of napping. I was pathetically thin, had an underactive thyroid, suffered from insomnia and was often stressed and depressed. I wonder why. . . Could it be lack of balance?
Balance is key. So allow me a moment to digress from my story a bit. It’s not just about what you eat that makes you healthy which are our secondary foods. That is certainly a major part of of it – - especially for children. Those developing cells require healthy nourishment so we have a solid foundation to built our health upon We also require strong primary foods – exercise, relationships, career, and spirituality. That’s where balance comes in.
As an adult, I learned to enjoy a variety of foods and, for the past ten years, most of what I ate was organic. I exercised religiously, however, spiritually I was a mess. I was a workaholic – working seven days a week, most months of the year, for over 15 years. I didn’t sleep well and I ate so fast I rarely enjoyed food unless I went out to eat. Most importantly, I had a daughter that from day one, viewed life as an seemingly insurmountable struggle. I was her only parent, so I had the constant burden of making sure she was OK, and consequently, neglected myself.
Four years ago I was diagnosed non-Hodgkins lymphoma. I know what you are probably thinking. Why? How? “You ate so healthy why did this happen to YOU?” Though I cannot clinically prove this, I believe I ‘created’ cancer because what I lacked in my life was BALANCE! Cancer is an inflammatory disease that thrives in a stress laden environment. Day after day, month after month, year after year untold stressors were creating the perfect storm for cancer to develop. I needed to learn how to let go and start focusing on me – having fun, developing relationships, as well as creating a connection with my higher self.
My education and training as a health counselor has really brought the need to having this mindset and attitude to the forefront. I’m not perfect. In fact I do have relapses, but awareness is the first step to change and isn’t really about progress not perfection? I make a major effort NOT to work seven days a week; I’m in a committed relationship, and I’m learning how to allow my now 27 year old daughter to experience life. I’ve become aware that if I can put even half the focus I put on others onto myself, I can have a rich, full, balanced life.
To be honest, I never thought at 64 years old I would feel better then I did at 30! I’m not here trying to sell you a dream; this is a story of someone, that for many years, had no quality of life. Today I have a road map of how I can maintain balance in my life, or better stated, I am usually able to tune in to my life’s rhythm and know which food, primary and/or secondary, needs to be addressed. The beautiful thing is that I don’t look at my life and think why did I make all those mistakes. I prefer to think that mistakes are life’s way of telling us to change direction. Didn’t my mistakes lead me to where I am today? And today I am cancer free and doing what I love: Helping people examine their nutritional options concurrent with having a life of joy and gratitude. What’s better than that?
